SOUND COLORATION from (very) early reflections
نویسنده
چکیده
Coloration is defined as changes in Timbre/”Klangfarbe”. Adding a reflection automatically changes the frequency response of a signal, giving some kind of coloration. This might be looked upon as distortion. However, reflections have been a part of sound distribution since the Greek amphi-theatres, indicating that some coloration must be acceptable, even “wanted”. The question is: “Which reflections give disturbing/unwanted coloration”? Most room-acoustic criteria assume that everything happening before/after a certain time is supposed to be good/bad (ex. 50ms/80 ms for speech/ music). We need to take a closer look at the distribution of reflections within these time intervals, to investigate coloration. This paper will give results from measurements in concert halls (Oslo, Munich, Vienna), and opera houses, and compere them with psychoacoustic studies on coloration. It is shown that measurements should be done with the orchestra present on the stage/in the orchestra pit (TOR, Through Orchestra impulse Response). ”Lonesome”/strong reflections with a time delay about 10 ms will give ”box-klang-coloration”. On the other side: Colorating reflections might be useful and fun, used in the right way, to support bass instruments etc.

متن کاملComputer Simulation Techniques for Acoustical Design of Rooms - How to Treat Reflections in Sound Field Simulation
The paper presents a number of problems related to sound reflections, and possible solutions or approximations that can be used in computer models. The problems include: specular and diffuse reflections, early and late reflections, scattering due to rough structure of surfaces, diffraction due to finite size of surfaces, curved surfaces, convex and concave surfaces, angle dependent absorption. ...
متن کاملINTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON ACOUSTICS MADRID , 2 - 7 SEPTEMBER 2007 Preference of the transfer functions for music recording in a coherent region of a reverberant field
Inverse filtering recovers the original speech by removing all the effect of the transfer function on speech perception in a reverberation sound field. However early reflections within around 30 (ms) after the direct sound increase the perceptional sound energy of speech sound. This article investigates preferable frequency characteristics for the early reflections within the 30 (ms) interval f...
متن کاملIridescent flowers? Contribution of surface structures to optical signaling.
The color of natural objects depends on how they are structured and pigmented. In flowers, both the surface structure of the petals and the pigments they contain determine coloration. The aim of the present study was to assess the contribution of structural coloration, including iridescence, to overall floral coloration. We studied the reflection characteristics of flower petals of various plan...
متن کاملUsing listening difficulty ratings of conditions for speech communication in rooms.
The use of listening difficulty ratings of speech communication in rooms is explored because, in common situations, word recognition scores do not discriminate well among conditions that are near to acceptable. In particular, the benefits of early reflections of speech sounds on listening difficulty were investigated and compared to the known benefits to word intelligibility scores. Listening t...
